38-year-old Steven Page is one of the two main singers behind the hit Canadian group Barenaked Ladies. Page who has been with the band from the start has decided to break away from the band that made him famous and persue a solo music career.
A smart move for Page who has a unique voice and great musical style but what will this mean for the future of the Barenaked Ladies. Ed Robertson said in a recent interview that the Barenaked Ladies will go on, and that Steven Page is irreplaceable.
On the Barenaked Ladies official website the group posted a public message regarding Steven Page's departure from the group:
"By mutual agreement, Steven Page will be parting company with the remaining members of Barenaked Ladies. Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson, and Tyler Stewart will continue recording and touring together as Barenaked Ladies. Steven Page will pursue solo projects including theatrical opportunities while the band enters the studio in April 2009, and hits the road in the fall.""
Original Barnaked Ladies band member Andy Creeggan also left the band in 1995 to work on othe musical projects.
Page was arrested on July 11, 2008 for posession of cocaine but the charges were later dropped. The arrest had little affect on the group's popularity.
As a Barenaked Ladies fan I find Steven Page's departure from the group disappointing but will be interested in seeing what kind of music the talented writer/singer will produce in the future.
