California health officials have declared an epidemic of Whooping Cough and have begun a vaccination campaign for teens and adults. Six infants recently died of Whooping Cough, a dangerous illness that can be prevented with routine vaccinations. The infected infants were all younger than 3 months old, and vaccinations do not become fully effective until 6 months of age. Officials are asking that teens and adults get vaccinated to prevent the spread of Whooping Cough to young babies and pregnant women. Those who were vaccinated as children are not protected as adults as immunity wears off over time.
There has been 1,500 cases of Whooping Cough so far in California and numbers are expected to rise over the next few months. Whooping cough symptoms appear much like any other cold and develops into a serious life threatening cough. Like any infectious disease it is highly likely to spread to other U.S. states. Here is a Today Show video clip with more on the Whooping Cough epidemic.
